Critical Reflection
Module learning
Taking the Critical Thinking and Communications module has been a pivotal experience in my academic journey. While I was enrolled in similar modules aimed at presentations and report writing in the past, this module improved my analytical skills and enhanced my ability to communicate complex ideas.
One major skill I developed was the ability to summarize information effectively to deliver clear and concise messages. This process involved identifying key points, eliminating unnecessary details, and structuring ideas logically and engagingly. Through consistent practice during class activities, I enhanced my ability to distill lengthy and complex concepts into simple, accessible explanations tailored to different audiences. This skill has proven invaluable, particularly in proposals, where I can convey my ideas persuasively while maintaining my audience’s attention.
Furthermore, the critical thinking component of the module taught me to consider vital factors that enhance the quality of my presentations and reports. This included evaluating the credibility of sources to avoid bias, anticipating potential counterarguments, and structuring my content to align with the needs and expectations of the audience. With that in mind, I could generate more compelling and well-supported arguments, ensuring my work was both persuasive and impactful.
In addition, the structures and frameworks taught in the module have been invaluable in helping me streamline my ideas. One framework that had a significant impact on me was the "Desirability, Feasibility, and Viability" approach to problem-solving. By addressing these three dimensions, I learned to ensure that my proposed solutions are not only relevant to the needs of the audience but also practical and achievable. This framework has helped me approach challenges more systematically, ensuring that my ideas are well-rounded and grounded in reality.
Project learning
Working with a diverse and talented group, 'ChargeAhead' was a rewarding experience that helped me grow both personally and professionally.
Initially, we agreed to tackle the issue of the lack of universal electric vehicle charging adapters. However, midway through the project, we realized that our initial solution might not be desirable, so we took a leap of faith and shifted our focus to a more pressing challenge. After a thorough discussion, we chose to address the issue of public bus ramps by proposing the implementation of electric ramps to replace manual ones, offering a more efficient and inclusive solution. Although I felt it was unfortunate to move away from our original idea, this experience taught me the importance of being adaptable to change and embracing new directions for the greater good of the project.
One key learning point for me was the importance of effective communication. Early on, a lack of communication within the group caused friction and slowed our progress. However, by recognizing and addressing these issues, we were able to overcome this obstacle. Through regular meetings and open discussions, we were able to assign tasks based on each member's strengths, ultimately working cohesively to achieve our goals. This experience taught me the value of adaptability, teamwork, and the power of constructive communication in driving success.
Lastly, I am incredibly grateful for the mock presentation sessions. The feedback I received was valuable in helping me consider different perspectives, which ultimately allowed me to refine and enhance certain aspects of our project. By incorporating these insights, I was able to develop a more well-rounded and effective solution.
